- 2 medium apples
- 113g butter
- 1/4 cup water
- 3tbsp flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup chopped pecans “optional”
- 1tsp cinnamon powder
How to make apple pie cinnamon rolls
- Firstly, make cinnamon buns dough as explained in my braided cinnamon buns post, and leave to proof for 1hr.
- Next, while the dough is proofing, make the apple pie filling by placing a medium sauce pot over medium heat. Melt the butter, and add the flour while mixing. Cook the flour for a few seconds while stirring and add the water and sugar. Leave to cook for a few minutes while stirring until it’s thick. Leave to cool.
- Grate the apples into a bowl and add the custard, chopped pecans & cinnamon powder. Mix well and set aside.
- After 1hr, place the dough unto a clean lightly floured surface and press out the air. Roll the dough to 16.5inch by 11.7inch. Make sure the dough is not sticking to your surface. Spread a layer of the apple pie filling onto the dough, making sure to leave an 1/2inch border on one side. Brush the border with little water or egg wash.
- Next, roll the dough up, working towards the border. Do not roll too tightly.
- Cut the roll into 12 equal pieces with a bread knife, taking care not to squash the rolls.
- Grease your baking dish and arrange the rolls. Proof for 1-2hrs until risen and puffy.
- Preheat your oven to 180 degree Celsius, brush the top of the buns with egg wash and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Lastly, brush the top of the buns with simple syrup and enjoy warm with your favorite beverage. Check out these drinks for inspiration
